Explanation

How long / How far | Measurement | How far are you from finishing? | Same |
How come? | Reason | How come the results haven't arrived? | N/A (Use 'Why') |
To what extent...? | Degree | To what extent was the team involved? | Same |
What... for? | Purpose | What did you buy that tool for? | For what purpose...? |
What... like? | Character | What is the new CEO like? | Same |
Whose? | Ownership | Whose signature is required on this? | Same |
Who/Which... Prep | Specificity | Who did you discuss the budget with? | With whom did you discuss...? |
What else? | Addition | What else was mentioned at the talk? | Same |
What if...? | Hypothesis | What if the deadline is moved up? | Same |
Speaking vs. Writing Note: In conversational English (B2+ Mastery), the preposition almost always moves to the end of the sentence (e.g., Who are you talking to?). Keeping the preposition at the beginning (e.g., To whom are you talking?) sounds very stiff and is usually only found in formal reports or legal documents.
